Virus Advice General Virus Advice There are a number of ways to reduce the risk of computer virus infection from the Internet, the basics have been listed below: 1) Install reputable anti-virus software Anti-virus software is the first line of defence against a potentially damaging virus. Unfortunately many people simply install anti-virus software and assume that their computer is fully protected, but this is not the case. Anti-virus software needs to be continually updated with the latest virus definitions in order to be effective. Outdated anti-virus software will only protect the computer against viruses that emerged before the update was released, the computer will not be protected against new viruses until an update is performed. Many anti-virus users install their chosen package and never perform an update, this will mean that the computer is not fully protected against viruses newer than the default virus definitions written into the anti-virus install. Consequently many users are unknowingly infected for weeks or even months. Please consult your individual anti-virus manufacturer for further information on how to update your particular packages definitions. 3) Do not open unsolicited email or files from unknown people If you receive an unexpected file, you should treat it with caution. Particularly if it is from someone that you don't know. It may be worth contacting the user by way of reply before attempting to open the file. 4) Files with double extensions It is well known that viruses will try to hide themselves by giving themselves double file extensions (eg: virusfile1.pif.bat). Any emails that contain such files should be deleted immediately. 5) Microsoft preview pane Many modern viruses use a MIME exploit discovered in Microsoft Outlook/Outlook Express. This exploit could allow a virus to infect a computer by the user simply clicking on the email and not actually running the attached file. The simplest way to reduce the risks of this exploit being used is to disable the preview pane using the following instructions: Outlook Express Select "View", then "Layout" from the menu. Outlook Click the Inbox folder to display its contents. 6) Exe files and downloads Never run an exe file (executable file) that you have received from an individual unless you were expecting the file. It is also advisable that when downloading files from the Internet, you ensure that the files are from reputable sites. Always ensure you scan any such file with your anti-virus software before attempting to run it. |
